Class 56s first started appearing regularly in Scotland in 1990 and spent the next ten years working MGR, cement and Enterprise services before EWS decided to concentrate the fleet elsewhere towards the end of 1999.  The year 2000 saw very little Grid activity north of the border but in 2001 the Class were once again making regular trips into Scotland, although during 2002 the number of visits dwindled, particularly with the loss of cement traffic to Freightliner.Anglo-Scottish MGR traffic in the early 1990s was often double headed when heading south from Millerhill.  This could be a 37+56 combination or a pair of Grids but I think a Class 26 and Class 56 double header was much rarer.  Here 26006 pilots 56075 across St Germains Level Crossing near Longniddry on 24 July 1990.
Another double headed MGR combination is seen approaching Millerhill from the north on 9 September 1991 with 37693 and 56098 in charge.
56010 passes the village of Culross on the estuary of the River Forth with a loaded MGR service bound for Longannet power station on 18 August 1998.
56032 threads through the Edinburgh suburbs near Blackford on the freight only line from Millerhill to Slateford and Haymarket with a westbound MGR service on 13 February 1998.
56062 is seen at Carrick Knowe in the west of Edinburgh on the lines to Fife with a loaded MGR service for Longannet power station on 17 May 1993.
The next few photographs illustrate some Grid activity in the sidings at Cockenzie power station on 22 September 1995.  56072 has reversed an MGR service from Blindwells opencast site the short distance from just across the ECML.
The shunter prepares to uncouple 56072 from the train.
56072 moves forward after uncoupling from the coal hoppers.
56072 runs round the train prior to pulling the hoppers through the unloading bunker.  The locomotive will then reverse the train back into the sidings for either another trip to Blindwells or another run round to take the wagons back to Millerhill.
56079 is approaching Blackford on the Edinburgh Suburban Line with an eastbound train of three MGR wagons, presumably cripples heading to or from repair, on 17 July 1997.
At the same location as the above picture of 56079, 56085 heads east with an MGR service on 21 September 1998.
Making a rare 2003 appearance for the Class, 56088 is pictured at Waverley on 19 July with the Edinburgh - Carlisle section of Pathfinders 'Grampian Gyrator' railtour.  The locomotive had also hauled the Carlisle - Mossend of the tour and whilst the train went to Inverness the Grid travelled to Edinburgh.  I went from Edinburgh to Preston to catch the railtour and returned home from Carlisle, having stopped off at Edinburgh in time for a lunch-time pint!
56101 passes through Kingsknowe on 24 May 1994 with an eastbound MGR service.
56102 is pictured a few miles north of Lockerbie on 19 September 1997 with the 6M27 1448 Mossend - Bescot Enterprise service.
56104 passes near the coal loading point at Ravenstruther (pronounced 'Renstrie') on 23 May 1994 with a train which was associated with the class for a number of years, the Wisbech - Deanside freight.
56104+56099 accelerate away from Monktonhall Junction on 18 June 1993 with a southbound MGR service.
56114 passes Kingsknowe with the 6D38 Oxwellmains to Viewpark cement tanks on 18 May 1999.
56117 passes Longniddry with a cement service for Oxwellmains on 21 June 2001 when the class were making sporadic reappearances in Scotland.
56120 is near Inveresk approaching Monktonhall Junction with a northbound MGR service on 5 June 1993.
56123 passes through Wallyford station on 19 June 1994 with a northbound MGR service.
56131 is seen at Longniddry on 19 June 1993 with a southbound MGR service.
