I'm not one for picking a favourite locomotive class but I've always had a soft spot for Whistlers. I started taking slides just at the time when the class was in its final decline and the summer of 1984 was spent trying to get as many shots as possible before the end.Shades of the famous Ditton to Broughton Lane BOC trains as 40001 together with 25235 wait in Polmadie sidings with a train for the nearby BOC depot on 30 June 1984.
40035 exits Calton South Tunnel with a return excursion to Bolton (via the ECML) on 7 May 1984.
40047 is seen at Carstairs having just taken over from a Class 86 on a northbound motorail service. The Class 40 had arrived with the 1610 Edinburgh - Liverpool. This train produced a number of the class that summer and I had taken the opportunity to travel to Carstairs that day.
On the same day that 40001 was at Polmadie (see above), 40135 was stabled at Motherwell Depot. And to cap that, at the other end of Motherwell shed 40015 could be found! Quite surprising given the relatively small number of locomotives still in service on 30 June 1984.
Now on to a location where you would be far more likely to see Class 40s, Warrington Arpley. 40152 is seen stabled here on 12 July 1984.
