Photographs of Class 40s

I'm not one for picking a favourite locomotive class but I've always had a soft spot for Whistlers.  I started taking slides just at the time when the class was in its final decline and the summer of 1984 was spent trying to get as many shots as possible before the end.

Click here for the full image (65kb) 40047 is seen at Carstairs having just taken over from a Class 86 on a northbound motorail service.  The Class 40 had arrived with the 1610 Edinburgh - Liverpool.  This train produced a number of the class that summer and I had taken the opportunity to travel to Carstairs that day.


Click here for the full image (85kb) 40118 passes through the pleasant surroundings of Princes St Gardens, Edinburgh, with the 1418 Edinburgh - Dundee on 19 July 1984.  Although normally worked by Class 27s if a Class 40 was in the area it could often be found making a few return trips over the Forth and Tay.
Click here for the full image (75kb) The pioneer Class 40, D200, was restored to BR green livery for its final days in service, including special railtour duties after withdrawal of the rest of the class.  It is seen here passing through Carlisle station with a freight on 26 June 1984.


Click here for the full image (59kb) On the same day that 40001 was at Polmadie (see above), 40135 was stabled at Motherwell Depot.  And to cap that, at the other end of Motherwell shed 40015 could be found!  Quite surprising given the relatively small number of locomotives still in service on 30 June 1984.

Click here for the full image (64kb) 40192 has arrived at Waverley with the Edinburgh portion of the 0930 ex Liverpool on 19 June 1984.  This was the inward working of the service referred to above but it normally ran with more than 2 coaches!
